Lung Cancer

Solid Tumors

Overview

Comprehensive treatment for lung cancer including surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and radiation therapy tailored to cancer type and stage.

When to Consult

Upon diagnosis of lung cancer, persistent cough, chest pain, or abnormal chest imaging findings.

What to Bring

CT scans, PET-CT scans, biopsy reports, pulmonary function tests, and blood test results.

Risk Factors

Smoking (primary risk factor)
Secondhand smoke exposure
Radon gas exposure
Asbestos exposure
Family history of lung cancer
Previous radiation therapy to chest
Air pollution
Age (risk increases with age)

Causes

Tobacco smoke carcinogens
Genetic mutations in lung cells
Environmental toxins and pollutants
Radon gas exposure
Asbestos fibers
Chronic lung inflammation
DNA damage from carcinogens
Genetic predisposition

Treatment Options

Surgery

Surgical removal of the tumor, including lobectomy (removal of a lung lobe), pneumonectomy (removal of entire lung), or wedge resection. Surgery is most effective for early-stage lung cancer and may be combined with other treatments.

Chemotherapy

Systemic drug therapy using cytotoxic medications to kill cancer cells. Can be administered before surgery (neoadjuvant), after surgery (adjuvant), or as primary treatment for advanced stages. Common regimens include platinum-based combinations.

Targeted Therapy

Precision medicine targeting specific genetic mutations (EGFR, ALK, ROS1, BRAF, MET, RET) in cancer cells. Includes tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) that block cancer cell growth signals, offering personalized treatment based on molecular profiling.

Immunotherapy

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors) that help the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells. Particularly effective for advanced non-small cell lung cancer with high PD-L1 expression.

Radiation Therapy

High-energy X-rays or other particles to destroy cancer cells. Can be used as primary treatment, adjuvant therapy, or palliative care. Techniques include stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for early-stage tumors.

Combination Therapy

Multimodal approach combining surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and radiation therapy tailored to cancer type, stage, molecular markers, and patient health status for optimal outcomes.
